Teams Apps can be a great way to add new functionality into Teams, either for 3rd-party services you already use outside of Teams, or new capabilities that you want to add to your Teams experience. As well as being able to build them yourself, there is an app store filled with different apps, offering a rich set of different types of capabilities.
