Why Work IQ Is the Most Important Microsoft 365 Copilot Feature

What's the most important Microsoft 365 Copilot feature? Is it Copilot Chat? Facilitator Agent? What about Edit with Copilot? My pick would actually be one that's a lot less prominent: Work IQ.

In the age of Copilot there are a whole bunch of providers that have really powerful AI tools. Some of these, arguably, set a path where Microsoft follows, like the collaboration to turn Claude Cowork into Copilot Cowork. But there is one place where Microsoft is the unquestionable industry leader: business data.

With hundreds of millions of Microsoft 365 users, SharePoint and OneDrive, and other apps, have become the default place where data that is relevant to an individual business' operations gets stored. And this data is the difference between AI giving you bland generic answers, and real business value.

Work IQ is the digital brain Copilot is built on to turn that data into intelligence and it's a unique aspect of Microsoft's AI offerings that no other provider matches. However, it's a bit of a black box as up until now, Microsoft hasn't really described in detail how these capabilities work beyond high level positioning.

Now though, that may be changing. Seth Patton, General Manager of Product Marketing for Microsoft 365 Copilot, shared a blog post, "A closer look at Work IQ" last week. While this wasn't a technical deep dive, it did provide a lot more information describing how Work IQ is intended to work with Copilot and your data.

I believe that telling the Work IQ story should be a far bigger priority for Microsoft. This is a truly unique capability at this scale in an otherwise crowded space and is the ultimate differentiator to make organizations who already use Microsoft 365 choose Copilot over competitors like Claude or ChatGPT.

What would you like to know about the inner workings of Work IQ?
