Microsoft 365 Copilot Pages Are Out, Libraries Are In — But at What Cost

Hold onto your hats! The layout of the Microsoft 365 Copilot app is changing again!

The Pages option in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app menu is going to be replaced with Library. This Library experience will combine AI-generated outputs in one place, so you can see both your Pages and generated images in the Library view.

I'm not the biggest fan of Copilot Pages, but up until now, I thought Microsoft was. I'm sure a lot of images get generated with Copilot, but I'd be surprised if it's anywhere close to the number of textual outputs. Finding a way to make those textual outputs more enduring and valuable was the point of Pages, but it being an option that gets hidden alongside the output of us testing how good a cat image AI can generate this week doesn't look like a good sign.

You know who else has a Library option in their menu? OpenAI's ChatGPT! But they also don't have Pages, or any other way to manage its longform text outputs outside of individual chats. Conceptually at least, Microsoft is ahead of OpenAI with Copilot's deep integration into Loop through Copilot Pages.

I've never heard a Copilot user express that they need all their generated content in one place. The fact that decades into modern Windows we still, by default, have separate "Pictures" and "Documents" folders should tell us all we need to know about how people think about these different assets.

The biggest issue though: Constant churn. Training materials are now wrong. Screenshots need to be updated. And this feature's release timeline for targeted release is EXACTLY the same as for General Availability. The "Documents" folder has held steady for nearly three decades, yet we're lucky if the Copilot UI holds steady for three weeks.
