Copilot Steps Back in Power Apps: Why Context Matters for AI Integration

Access to Copilot in the Power Apps maker portal for canvas apps is being removed. The Copilot button to open the studio-based Copilot pane and the associated functionality is being deprecated.

This isn't the end of the road for Copilot-based assistive capabilities in Power Apps, but does seem to be an acknowledgement that what works in some places (a Copilot sidecar in Word for example) is just not as useful everywhere - it is audience and context dependent.

Other capabilities, both very specific, like Copilot for Power Fx, and more general, like Power Apps Plans, seem to be a better fit for the needs of Power Apps users. And elsewhere, new innovations like the App Builder Agent, bring simple app building outside of the Power Apps maker portal and into Microsoft 365 Copilot.

With Microsoft stepping back from some Copilot, this is, in my opinion, a good news story, where we are starting to get past the frenetic "Copilot must be everywhere" approach of the last couple of years, and into a more measured mapping of where AND how AI is actually most useful in different parts of the ecosystem.
