Microsoft 365 Copilot Adds Communication Memory to Boost Relevance

Another personalization feature is coming to Copilot for Microsoft 365 Copilot licensed users.

Communication Memory in Copilot will aggregate a summarized memory of Microsoft 365-based communication channels a user has access to, allowing an enhanced ability for Copilot to provide relevant results.

This is an interesting approach that highlights a key positional advantage for Microsoft over competitors like OpenAI in this AI-based memory space. ChatGPT's memory works across your chat history (which Copilot's does not) but its connectors (for most services) work transactionally, meaning there is not data sitting behind ChatGPT's responses to provide live "memory". However, this may change as OpenAI changes up its approach to enterprise connectivity for services such as Google Drive.

Since Copilot was first announced in the spring of 2023, it has been abundantly clear that Microsoft's distinct superpower to truly make Copilot a knowledgeable assistant is the wealth of data it stewards for customers. With this update, there's the potential for Microsoft to turn this notional advantage into a significant differentiator in the business AI race.

This will be starting to roll out to General Availability from September. See MC1127234 in the Microsoft 365 message center for more information.
