SharePoint Agents Are Coming to Teams Channels- Where They Belong

SharePoint Agents are coming to Teams channels across desktop and with limited functionality to mobile clients. This builds on the existing capability to add agents into group chats.

Channels make sense for SharePoint Agents. The agent adds a chat-based functionality into the file storage layer that exists below all Teams, but the right place for chat is within Teams, not within the SharePoint GUI. This update enables that AI chat enhancement to be available for all Teams users without them needing to delve into SharePoint, that for many is entirely abstracted by the Teams interface.

In fact, with the focus becoming teams of humans and agents collaborating alongside each other, it seems to me there is the opportunity to go full circle and for Teams to once again become the primary interface for Copilot extensibility (as was very solidly the case back when Copilot first appeared). The chat-based primacy of agents, alongside the seamless chat-based collaboration of Teams already broken down in team-focused work strands, make it a much stronger platform for where agents should "live" versus SharePoint or elsewhere across Microsoft 365.

Rollout will begin mid-August and be completed in September. See MC1137613 in the Microsoft 365 message center for more information.
